Product Manager (Ads Business) - Mercari in Tokyo, Japan
With the Mercari marketplace app, we boldly embrace challenges in pursuit of our mission to create value within a global marketplace where everyone can engage in buying and selling.
In a world where numerous goods and services are produced and sold, many items are discarded without individuals realizing their potential value, resulting in the wasteful depletion of precious natural resources. Our objective is to combat this waste by encouraging as many users as possible to utilize Mercari. It offers a platform for individuals to easily and safely buy and sell items they no longer need.
(Learn more about Mercari’s mission and values here.)
We are actively working on establishing an advertising business to incorporate ads within the Mercari app. This is a first-party advertising endeavor where Mercari takes full ownership of both the development and operation of the advertising product.
The development of the ad product holds critical importance in this endeavor. It must not only meet the business objectives of ad clients and agencies but also enhance the profitability of the Mercari platform.
Product managers play two key roles and bear significant responsibilities in this context. Firstly, they are tasked with meticulously designing the product in accordance with established roadmaps. Secondly, they work closely with engineers to oversee the progress of product development.
These core responsibilities may also entail collaboration in joint projects with external clients, primarily ad agencies.
Specific work responsibilities include the following:
As a product manager, your responsibilities encompass:
- Formulating strategic proposals, plans, and development directions.
- Crafting specifications for new projects and features and subsequently collaborating closely with engineers, designers, customer service representatives, and marketers to implement them.
- Assuming ownership of the product development processes and guiding the product team throughout the development cycle.
- Overseeing and conducting negotiations with ad agencies as part of the advertising business initiatives.
We are on a collective journey to establish a global marketplace, and while the path ahead is challenging, it offers opportunities for us to take on unique challenges and drive disruptive innovation. Each team member takes personal responsibility for their work, leveraging their expertise to empower the team in creating the finest possible product. Our actions are deeply rooted in Mercari's three core values: Go Bold, All for One, and Be a Pro.
The Ads Business Team represents a nascent organization with a limited number of members.
Our development structure comprises two distinct engineering teams. The first team, the ad distribution team, oversees the entire backend of the ad system. The second team, the operation team, primarily focuses on frontend aspects, including Ads Manager and the Admin Tool. While this job posting pertains to a product manager position within the ad distribution team, candidates with experience in the first-party ad domain may be considered for more suitable roles.
Despite our small team size, we are diligently working to launch a groundbreaking new business. If Mercari's values resonate with you, we welcome you to join us in building an exceptional team together!
Qualifications for the role include:
- A shared commitment to the mission and values of the Mercari Group and its affiliated companies.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a product manager, particularly with internet or smartphone-related products, or a similar background.
- Experience in the field of advertising business.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with engineers, test engineers, infrastructure teams, designers, and other stakeholders to develop and launch services.
Additional qualifications sought for the role include:
- Proven experience in successfully launching or scaling a service.

- Experience in engaging in productive dialogues with clients, including advertising clients and agencies, while functioning as a product manager.

- Proficiency in data analysis, including the use of SQL and/or BigQuery for data analysis.
- A technical-related degree from a four-year university or equivalent practical experience in a related role.

Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people
"How can I contribute to society's prosperity given our limited resources?" This question served as the inspiration for the creation of the Mercari marketplace app in 2013 by our founder, Shintaro Yamada, during his travels around the world. We firmly believe that by facilitating the circulation of various forms of value, extending beyond physical items and money, we can open doors for individuals to pursue their aspirations and make positive contributions to society and those in their proximity. Mercari is committed to leveraging technology to connect people across the globe, ultimately striving to build a world where everyone can unlock their full potential. Equal Opportunity Hiring
At Mercari, our mission is to build a world where no one's potential is constrained by their background, and where everyone has the liberty to generate value. We strongly emphasize that fostering a culture of Diversity & Inclusion is integral to realizing our mission.
This principle naturally extends to our hiring procedures. Mercari is dedicated to eradicating discrimination based on attributes such as age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, physical abilities, and other similar factors. Our objective is to ensure that individuals who resonate with our mission and values can become part of our team, regardless of their personal backgrounds.
