Software Engineer, Backend - Mercari in Tokyo, Japan
Team Mission / Work Responsibilities
Mercari is gearing up to introduce a new venture aimed at bolstering the development of a circular economy. The team responsible for this new endeavor is diligently crafting a resale service platform that's accessible to both individuals and businesses. Their goal is to establish a mechanism for reinvigorating the substantial 43.7 trillion yen worth of "hidden assets" in Japan. The overarching aim is to further broaden Japan's secondhand market, which is presently valued at around 3 trillion yen.
To be more specific, our enterprise revolves around normalizing the reuse of items by erasing the boundaries between online and offline domains, as well as between primary and secondary distribution channels. This represents Mercari's first foray into such a challenge, and it harbors significant untapped potential.
Learn more about Mercari's mission and values here.
Specific work responsibilities include the following:
- Take the lead in spearheading the launch of a novel platform in the Recommerce sector.
- Determine the appropriate technologies and formulate the system architecture and specifications required for the development of this new platform.
- Devise and execute APIs by leveraging the Google Cloud Platform and employing the Go programming language.
The term "hidden assets" refers to the valuation of unused items present in Japanese households, converted into Japanese yen based on the average transaction values on Mercari. "Unused items" are items that have not been utilized for at least one year but continue to be retained in households without a specific purpose.

Key qualifications and characteristics for the role include:

- A track record of launching new services and addressing the challenges associated with the growth phase of a service.

The system design interview prioritizes your capacity to comprehensively identify the problem at hand and assess how, by means of your thought process, you arrive at a solution while collaborating effectively with your team members, rather than testing your proficiency in specific, niche technologies or frameworks.
Specifically, we will check the following points:
- Your communication proficiency with the interviewer is a crucial aspect of the evaluation.
- In cases where you are confronted with system requirements that are unfamiliar, your ability to inquire effectively and achieve a precise understanding is pivotal.

- Your capability to factor in scalability and availability considerations is an important element of the assessment.
- When facing trade-offs in problem-solving, your decision-making process is of particular interest.
- Your thought process for enhancing and refining ideas is also a critical area of evaluation.
- Lastly, your awareness of system problems and potential improvements is taken into account during the interview process.

Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people
"How can I contribute to society's prosperity given our limited resources?" This question served as the inspiration for the creation of the Mercari marketplace app in 2013 by our founder, Shintaro Yamada, during his travels around the world. We firmly believe that by facilitating the circulation of various forms of value, extending beyond physical items and money, we can open doors for individuals to pursue their aspirations and make positive contributions to society and those in their proximity. Mercari is committed to leveraging technology to connect people across the globe, ultimately striving to build a world where everyone can unlock their full potential. Mercari is dedicated to eradicating discrimination based on attributes such as age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, physical abilities, and other similar factors.
